Rules of behaviour preceding a general anaesthetic
You also contribute to the success of your treatment:
Six hours before the anaesthetic
- Do not eat anything and only drink clear liquids.
Two hours before the anaesthetic
- Stop drinking all fluids, including clear ones
- Exception: Preparatory tablets requiring a little water
On the day of the anaesthetic
- Do not smoke any more.
- Remove all make-up (including nail varnish, etc.) and leave all removable jewellery (e.g. rings, earrings, necklaces, piercings, etc.) on the ward.
- Please do not bring spectacles or contact lenses into the operating theatre
(Spectacles are only permitted by arrangement and solely in cases of extremely poor vision) - Leave dentures and hairpieces, wigs etc. on the ward
- If you take tablets in the morning, please discuss with the anaesthetist what tablets you are permitted to take, during the preparatory talk for anaesthesia.
- Please only bring hearing aids into the operating theatre if you would otherwise hear absolutely nothing.
